On January 26, 2023, one of Hydrologiq’s co-founders, Ben Lindley, was invited to a meeting with Jon Hunt from Toyota GB to explore powering a ground-breaking but very challenging project. Toyota wanted to power an entire film production using hydrogen-fuelled generators in a UK city centre, powering a large number of projectors, cameras and vehicles, all to be working flawlessly within less than a month. Something many considered unachievable.
If achieved, this would not only likely be the world’s first 100% hydrogen powered film shoot – it would quell any objection to the practicalities of making hydrogen work for off-grid power.
For Hydrologiq, this was exactly the sort of challenge that we are used to. But it was a project that had to happen to showcase hydrogen’s potential as a clean, drop-in replacement for diesel temporary off-grid power. If a project with no margin for slippage, with only a day for setup and teardown, in a challenging location with two 110kVA generators and up to 640kg of on-site hydrogen storage capacity could work, then so too could other off-grid use cases in film, events, construction, and more.
