The European Commission’s European Green Deal is a roadmap for transforming the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive low-carbon economy, with net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy is central to the plan’s approach. The FCH JU believes energy from hydrogen has a key role in this energy transition.
We also welcome the European Commission’s new European Industrial Strategy Package and its proposal for a Clean Hydrogen Alliance. This initiative can exploit the benefits that hydrogen can bring to the EU economy, and is clear evidence of the success of our public-private partnership approach. The FCH JU report, Hydrogen Roadmap Europe, concluded that hydrogen could account for 24% of the EU’s energy demand and 5.4 million jobs by 2050.
To achieve the Green Deal’s aim of climate neutrality, the Commission supports the research and innovation needed to develop breakthrough technologies. This will be focused on key industrial sectors, including hydrogen, energy storage (batteries), smart grids, carbon capture, transport, and steelmaking. Support for private-public partnerships will also help ‘climate and resource frontrunners’ to develop the first commercial applications of these breakthrough technologies by 2030. Central to this is a coordinated and integrated approach that brings together expertise from different sectors.
