Hydrogen planes, trains and automobiles: Fuelling the future of mobility in North America

A seamless transition to zero emissions vehicles, with those powered by hydrogen playing a key role – that’s the dream for many automobile manufacturers as they look to provide eco-friendly alternatives and slowly say goodbye to conventional diesel and petrol combustion engines.

Three main players dominate this clean mobility market in North America: Honda, Hyundai and Toyota, all of which currently have hydrogen-powered vehicles running on North American roads, with the sunshine state of California being the main host of such innovations. At the time of publication, there are more than 9,200 light-duty fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) currently on Californian roads, all of which have been manufactured and supplied by Honda, Hyundai and Toyota. While California is currently waving the FCEV flag, so to speak, the technology is by no means limited to this area, with Honda, Hyundai and Toyota all looking to extend their footprint in the US and reach a wider customer base.

For Honda, the ultimate commitment is carbon neutrality and electrification is the pathway. “We have made two global commitments towards that goal: to have two thirds of new vehicle sales electrified by 2030, and to be carbon neutral by 2050,” Marc Deutsch, Manager of Electric Vehicles, American Honda Motor, told H2 View.
