The logistics industry is characterised by complex structures and time-limited processes, but climate change does not wait. Small and especially large retailers face challenges saving carbon dioxide (CO2) in the delivery and distribution of goods. Logistics platforms can particularly benefit from emission-free hydrogen solutions. The implementation and realisation of these solutions can take place immediately and is simpler than initially assumed. In fact, with many of the technical advancements being developed as part of the hydrogen economy, shifting to new models will lead to across the board efficiency gains.
Since the beginning of the Ukraine war, the situation for the logistics industry is completely new — on one hand the issue of supply chain disruptions and security of supply, on the other hand compliance with climate targets and ESG guidelines. Many of the issues leading to these disruptions and compliance concerns could not have been predicted – with that being said, logistics as a whole must become more resilient.
A wide variety of solutions are available to reduce emissions in road and freight transport — but they currently see little success. Nevertheless, secure logistics concepts are needed to prevent supply bottlenecks and at the same time guarantee that the highest climate protection standards are upheld. Alternative fuels such as green hydrogen can offer long-term solutions for decarbonising the logistics sector. Although the technology is still relatively new, it has shown great promise, and the continually growing support it is being shown by governments around the world should give reason to be optimistic.
