Hydrogen can address issues relating to flexibility, security and affordability

Flexibility, security and resilience, and affordability are among the key systemic challenges with decarbonisation.

Dealing with short-term and seasonal power fluctuations, the regulation of supply and demand and building resilience in isolated systems are all enduring issues – while events of the last year have underlined the importance of import and export security and difficulties dealing with unexpected changes in commodity prices.

All these elements were highlighted in the Hydrogen Council’s most recent report, Hydrogen in Decarbonized Energy Systems, which underlined how renewable hydrogen can add flexibility to energy systems and reduce decarbonisation costs.

Hydrogen-to-power provides resilience against the most challenging parts of the year, when renewable load is low and energy demand is high, and complements the role of batteries and carbon capture and storage (CCS)
