The climate clock is ticking. We’re getting ever closer to the UK Government’s 2050 target to reach Net Zero and the more polluting sectors are facing mounting pressure to decarbonise.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), transport is currently more reliant on fossil fuels than any other sector and accounts for 37% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Consequently, across the globe, industries and governments alike are now considering different approaches to tackling this issue – with many looking to hydrogen as a core source that will drive the move towards cleaner energy sources.
For example, the UK Government released its British Energy Security Strategy in April 2022, which outlined that the country will double its ambition for hydrogen production up to 10GW by 2030, with at least half of this coming from electrolytic hydrogen. So, there is now greater pressure to deliver on this target – but how can businesses kick start the hydrogen economy to work towards this looming deadline? Importantly, what practical steps need to be in place now to ensure that current hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and vehicles are ready to cope with future demand?
