Hydrogen has emerged as an essential strategic alternative for speeding up the energy transition and developing new economic growth centres around the world. In China, the hydrogen industry value chain structure is basically built with hydrogen application progress to large-scale promotion, as industrial scales and applications expand.
In September 2020, during the UN Conference, China committed to achieving the peak carbon dioxide emissions called carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets, which outlined the green and low-carbon developments of China’s energy production and consumption routes. The dural carbon targets encourage China to shift its emphasis from quantity expansion to quality and efficiency improvement. The hydrogen industry is a significant indicator of China’s progress to forward green and low-carbon growth, resource utilisation efficiency, energy structure optimisation, and energy security.
In recent years, China has taken hydrogen energy as the key direction of strategic emerging industries and strengthened the strategic layout of hydrogen energy by relying on the construction of major demonstration projects, such as the green winter Olympics and the fuel cell vehicles demonstration city clusters. By 2022, more than 50 provinces and cities in China have issued development plans for the hydrogen energy industry, more than 200 hydrogen refuelling stations have been built and operated, and more than 9,000 fuel cell vehicles have been sold.
