Europe lost batteries and solar – don’t let hydrogen mobility be next

It is a pivotal time for Europe’s automotive industry – one of profound and urgent transformation which requires proper support for success. Hydrogen can play a crucial role in decarbonising mobility, improving sector competitiveness, and building a more resilient energy system in Europe. Policymakers must include it in the vision.

Hydrogen as a clean fuel offers much-needed solutions that will plug the gaps where direct electrification is less possible or desirable. Its propulsion systems often offer greater range in a smaller and lighter package, and the technology can be an excellent complementary solution alongside electric batteries.

In commercial vehicles, Daimler’s hydrogen truck has completed more than 1,000km without refuelling. For other long-haul travel, such as in shipping and aviation, e-fuels derived from hydrogen, as well as hydrogen itself, offer similar advantages.
