For the hydrogen economy to become tangible, it is still necessary to travel a path marked by research and development of new technologies, processes and solutions along its entire value chain, and high-pressure hydrogen compression is one of them.
To make its use extensible for some services and applications, hydrogen presents some storage challenges due to its low density at ambient temperature and pressure. Therefore, the basic way to densify hydrogen is to compress it at very high pressure.
Hydrogen economy aims for optimisation of energy production efficiency, mainly those produced by renewable systems, by producing hydrogen with energy production surplus. Currently, as a general term, electricity produced by renewable resources is generated by request. Thus, when power is not required, production means are stopped, even if there is disposable wind, wind power generators are still, or reservoirs may be emptied not using the hydroelectric power stations.
Hydrogen economy is based on exploiting energy when is available at first line, not when it is requested. Then, whenever there is low demand but high availability, energy surplus should be used to produce hydrogen as a mean of energy storage.
