Cespira looks to drive forward hydrogen ICE mobility

Volvo Group and Westport Fuel Systems’ joint venture (JV), aimed at fast-tracking the commercialisation and adoption of a fuel system that allows diesel engines to run on hydrogen, has been launched with a new name.

Initially formed as HPDI Technology – the namesake of the system it plans to integrate into heavy-duty internal combustion engines (ICEs) – the JV emerged in September as Cespira.

“Cespira comes from the Latin word espira, which means breathe out and the C stands for a clean source,” the JV’s Vice-President and Commercial Officer, Anders Johansson, told H2 View. “It fits perfectly into our strategy and mission for the future.”
