Five years ago today (January 31 2020) the UK left the EU, splitting the country between leave and remain.
At the time, ‘leavers’ foresaw a bright new independent age, the UK taking back control of its borders and being in charge of its political and economic destiny, spurred by bespoke trade deals and bilateral opportunities. Only for many people, the vision hasn’t quite matched the reality.
