The US state of California has long been a leader in climate policy and clean technologies, including hydrogen. However, the state’s electric grid has become somewhat renowned for its intermittency, with blackouts being a regular occurrence.
According to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) – the body responsible for managing the state’s power grid – the primary cause of blackouts in California is the increased demand for electricity during periods of high heat, especially during the summer months.
Other factors that CAISO says contributes to such blackouts include wildfires, natural disasters and equipment failures.
